SOME OF US HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING THE "SOUNDS" OF PATRIOTISM THE LAST FEW DAYS. BOOM, BOOM, BANG! JULY 4TH GIVES AMERICANS AN OPPORTUNITY TO SAY "I LOVE AMERICA" IN MANY WAYS, AND ONE OF THOSE WAYS IS BY PERSONAL OR PUBLIC FIREWORKS DISPLAYS. BUT, OF COURSE, OUR DEVOTION TO "THE LAND OF THE FREE AND THE HOME OF THE BRAVE" GOES WAY BEYOND THE NOISE OF OUR CELEBRATION . ADLAI STEVENSON SAID IT WELL. "I VENTURE TO SUGGEST THAT PATRIOTISM IS NOT A SHORT AND FRENZIED OUTBURST OF EMOTION BUT THE TRANQUIL AND STEADY DEDICATION OF A LIFETIME."

THAT'S HOW IT IS WITH OUR LOVE AND DEVOTION TO OUR LORD. SOMETIMES WE WORSHIP TOGETHER IN A LOUD, EMOTIONAL SORT OF WAY, WITH SHOUTS OF PRAISE AND DYNAMIC MUSIC. OTHER TIMES WE ARE QUIET AND RESERVED, REFLECTING ON GOD'S LOVE AND BLESSINGS. WE ENJOY BOTH, DON'T WE? ONE DEFINITION OF PRAISE IS TO EXALT OR EXTOL. TO EXTOL MEANS "TO PRAISE LAVISHLY" (WEBSTER). DO YOU THINK THAT IS WHAT WE DO, LAVISHLY HEAP PRAISE ON OUR LORD GOD?

IN APOSTLE PETER'S LETTER TO THE PILGRIMS OF THE DISPERSION, HE INDICATED THAT, IN ESSENCE, GENUINE FAITH RESULTS IN PRAISE, EVEN THOUGH A BELIEVER HAS TO GO THROUGH SEVERE TESTS AND TRIALS. THE CHRISTIANS PETER WROTE TO WERE FAITHFULLY FOLLOWING CHRIST IN A PAGAN AND HOSTILE SOCIETY, MUCH LIKE TODAY'S SUDAN, PARTS OF INDIA, AND SAUDIA ARABIA, TO NAME A FEW. THEY SUFFERED POLICE HARASSMENT, RIOTS AND SLANDER AND WERE THE LOWEST OF THE LOW IN THE SOCIAL ORDER. PRAISE? WHO COULD GIVE PRAISE IN SUCH AN ENVIRONMENT? NOTICE WHAT PETER SAID ABOUT THEIR COMMITMENT TO JESUS. "THOUGH NOW YOU DO NOT SEE HIM, YET BELIEVING, YOU REJOICE WITH JOY INEXPRESSIBLE AND FULL OF GLORY" (I PETER 1:86)

SIDE BY SIDE, MOST (ALL?) OF OUR TRIALS WOULD SEEM AS NOTHING COMPARED TO WHAT THESE DEAR SAINTS EXPERIENCED. YET THEIR FAITH RESULTED IN PRAISE, HONOR AND GLORY AT THE REVELATION OF JESUS CHRIST. THE "TRUE GRACE OF GOD" (5:12) HAD BEEN EXTENDED TO THEM, BUT IT HAS BEEN GIVEN TO US ALSO. DOES ANYONE FEEL LIKE GIVING PRAISE TO THE LORD?

A time to remember

A WORD FROM THE PASTOR:
We observed Memorial Day, remembering those who have given their lives to secure our safety and freedom in the U.S.A. We are grateful for their service and sacrifice. Let's pray for the families of those men and women who have given their all in past and present wars.

How is your memory? While this Memorial Day observance gives us pause to recall our fallen soldiers, God calls on us to remember some historical events that effect our lives, even today. We are to remember that Jesus gave His life for our sins. he was "bruised for our iniquities" (Isa. 53:5). He was beaten; He shed His blood for our salvation (I. cor. 11:23-25). Are you thankful for what He did?

When the nation of Israel was preparing to enter the land of promise, God told them to remember His past dealings with them. He led them, fed them, protected them and gave many promises that would be fulfilled as they obeyed. But, later they forgot, turned their backs on Him, and suffered the consequences.

Certainly we are to look forward, but a backward glance helps keep things in perspective and helps us focus on the goals we want to accomplish. We don't want to be like Mark Twain who said " When I was younger I could remember anything, whether it had happened or not."

During our worship hour, we took a journey to Zambia, Africa, by way of testimony and pictures, as we share some of our incredible, recent mission experiences. Jesus said "Ye shall be my witnesses." We are grateful for the opportunity to do that even in the "uttermost part of our world." God is doing great things today in many nations. There is great revival in Africa!

What Do You Have In The House?

A word from the Pastor:
Friday evening at the Mother/Daughter Banquet, a game was played called "What's in your purse?" The objective was to determine which group of ladies had the most itmes from a long list. NO one had a kitchen sink! However, it might surprise some to find out what people (men and women) consider important enough to carry with them. And while we're on the subject, what about all those things we store in the house of garage? Valuable stuff!

When the widow of a prophet came to Elisha, explaining that the creditors were coming to take her sons as payment for her debt, Elisha asked, "What do you have in the house?" "Nothing, except a jar of oil," was her reply. What value was that, compared to the debt she owed?

At that point the mother wasn't thinking about God being a part of the equation. God, working through Elisha, multiplied the oil, enough to pay her debts, and enough left over to live on.

What do you have in your house, moms? A bible prayer? How about Godly influence? Le me urge you to give taht to God and let Him bring about the desired changes and blessings you need in your home.

AS YOU GATHER TODAY, (SUNDAY, APRIL 29TH) WE ARE ON OUR JOURNEY HOME FROM ZAMBIA, AFRICA. I HOPE YOU ARE AS HAPPY TO BE IN CHURCH THIS MORNING AS THE ZAMBIANS WOULD BE. MOST OF YOU PROBABLY DROVE A NICE CAR TO CHURCH. IF YOU LIVED IN ZAMBIA YOU WOULD BE PLEASED TO WALK FOR MILES TO ATTEND CHURCH TODAY. MOST OF YOU WILL LEAVE WORSHIP SERVICES AND HAVE A GOOD LUNCH IN A RESTAURANT OR AT HOME. MOST ZAMBIANS EAT ONE MEAL A DAY. THE "STAPLE" FOOD IN ZAMBIA IS CALLED MEALY MEAL AND TASTES SOMETHING LIKE GRITS.

ZAMBIA IS THE EIGHTEENTH POOREST NATION IN THE WORLD. VERY FEW CONGREGATIONS OWN PROPERTY. THEY MAY HAVE CHURCH IN A HOME, A RENTED ROOM, OR OUT IN THE OPEN, PERHAPS UNDER A TREE. YET THE CHURCH IS GROWING RAPIDLY. PEOPLE ARE OPEN TO THE GOSPEL. THERE IS A GREAT REVIVAL IN THE LAND! WE LOOK FORWARD TO SHARING WITH YOU IN THE NEAR FUTURE SOME OF WHAT GOD IS DOING IN OUR WORLD.

"The Living Christ"

Do you believe in the resurrection? Some in the church at Corinth didn't -- until the Apostle Paul taught them. He asked the church, "Now if Christ is preached that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?" (I Cor. 15:12 NKJV). In the background of the Gentile converts there had been no room for the idea that someone could die and return to the living.
Paul went on to say, "But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ is not risen. And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is also vain and your faith is also vain" (Vs. 13-14). To paraphrase Paul's words, "If there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ is still dead, and if He is still in the tomb your sins haven't been forgiven, your faith is futile--it means nothing."
However, the Apostle didn't leave them there! He explained, "But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep" (v.20). "For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive" (v. 22). The shout is heard, "Christ is risen, " and the response of the believer is, "He is risen indeed!"

"The Wider Kingship"

As Jesus came near Jerusalem, riding on a donkey, the people shouted His praises and wanted to make Him their earthly King -- then and there. But Luke writes, "Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it" (Luke 19:41, NKJV). Jerusalem (and the nation) had God's Word that the Messiah would come and save them. But when He came they didn't recognize Him because their hearts were hardened toward God. They knew what was written but failed to take it to heart.

Do you think God ever weeps over your City? Jesus said to Jerusalem, "If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace." (NKJV)

But, how about you, fellow Christian. Do you have peace? You may have made peace with God but how about the peace of God that is so wonderful it is beyond understanding. God is longing for His people to come back to Him, love Him, and obey Him. could it be that your city -- my city doesn't have peace because the turmoil in our lives keeps us from sharing the good news that Jesus has come to save?

"TELLING OUR STORIES"

What's your story? The right place, time, or setting may bring out the untold tale we have hidden deep inside. It is our story that needs to be told. Murascki Shikibu writes "[the art of the novel] does not simply consist in the author's telling a story about the adventures of some other person...It happens because the story teller's own experience, of men and things, whether for good or ill...has moved him to an emotion so passionate that he can no longer keep it shut up in his heart" (George Sweeting. Great Quotes and Illustrations, Word Books, Wako, Texas. 1985, pgs. 240-241).

How does that relate to the Gospel of Jesus Christ? We talk about telling the "story of Jesus and His love." Podcast for March 25th, 2007 "I love To Tell The Story" Mathew 28:16-20

Sorry that I haven't been able to get a podcast out last couple of weeks with sermon. I missed last weeks entirely due to a bout of pancreatis, a very unpleasant illness keep me in your prayers ~Chris

"Pulpit/Pew Mutual support"

This week's theme is of great interest to me, a pastor. In my senior year of high school, our acapella choir sang a song with the message that: no man is an island, he is not isolated from the rest of mankind, he needs others and they need him. It is the same with the pastor and congregation. We need one another.

In his book, Who Said That, George Sweeting quotes Robert G. Lee, page 347:

Senator Robert S. Kerr of Oklahoma was a member of the First Baptist Church of Oklahoma City. He was a long-time Sunday school teacher and Christian philanthropist. He gave more than one million dollars to Baptist institutions in Oklahoma.

His pastor, Dr. H. H. Hobbs, in his tribute to his friend at the memorial service in the church quoted a prayer the senator had published many years before called "A Prayer for My Pastor":

"Our Father, let me be a pillar of strength to help hold him up and not a thorn in his back to pull him down. Let me support him without striving to possess him. Let me lift his hands without placing shackles around them. Let me give him help that he may devote more time in working for the salvation of others and less time in gratifying my vanity. Let me work for him as the pastor of all the members and not compel him to spend precious time in bragging on me. Let me be unselfish in what I do for him and not selfish in demanding that he do more for me. Let me strive to serve him and the church more and be happy as he serves me less and the church and others more."

I would welcome someone praying that prayer for me.

Been having trouble figuring out this new recording device we have called an "ikey." It's a digital recorder that records in wav or compressed Mp3 formats. Problem is its difficult to tell when its recording? The manual states that you turn it on, plug in your storage device like a flash drive, the device is supposed to "blink" six times then show how much space is left on your drive. However I've never seen it do that LOL. Then your too plug in line-level rca inputs into the device's jacks, adjust the level until the led meter light stays off. After doing this your supposed to be able to select your desired bit rate for your recording using the "select" key (wav or Mp3 format). Then you are to press the "record" key to start recording, when you do this the leds are supposed to flash once, which I never see and end up pressing the "record" key again a couple of times until I do. Which means somtimes it records sometimes I'm just stopping the recording LOL.

"As we mature spiritually, we exhibit a growing capacity to care for and appreciate one another in the body of Christ, regardless of our differences." Those words wer written by Joseph Stowell. When we care for people it becomes easy to extend Christian hospitality. However, we don't just extend a friendly hand to fellow believers. Hospitality is an excellent way to reach the lost for Jesus Christ.

A WORD FROM THE PASTOR:

With sadness of heart, I surmise that many (the majority?) of Christians do most, if not all, of their praying and reading of Scripture on Sunday during Sunday School or morning worship. The church is made up of all those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ. So, what affect does the church have on our world the rest of the week? How are we, God's people, allowing Him to influence, direct, intervene, motivate, etc., us the other 166 hours of our week? Something to give serious consideration to, don't you think?

Billy Graham, quoted in George Sweeting's book, Who Said That, wrote, "When comfort and ease and pleasure are put ahead of duty and conviction, progress is always set back. What makes us Christians shrug our shoulders when we ought to be flexing our muscles? What makes us apathetic in a day when there are loads to lift, a world to be won, and captives to be set free? Why are so many bored, when the times demand action? Christ told us in the last days there would be an insipid (lack of interest, dull) attitude toward life."

The Church is a 24/7, living entity. What do you say? Can we come to the place where the Lord is the major player in every aspect of our lives?

Where using a different method to record sermon's and are panning out the technical difficulites. We're in hopes that the "podcast" will return by next week.

"Accessing God's Provisions" II Timothy 2:15

This past Sunday's service was about leading into the upcoming 50 day spiritual adventure program we will be doing (February 18th thru April 8th). It is entitled: "Untapped Miracles For Tapped Out Christians", your encouraged to obtain a copy of the Adventure journal, and each family should also have access to the Adventure Guidebook entitled when the troops are tired. These books are available through the links provided or at the local Church at 6808 missouri ave Hammond IN.

Service was very good, singing went well the spirit of God was among us. It was a very comfortable "feel" throughout.

The Pastor's Sermon was entitled "God Isn't Lost" , intresting choice of title. His message was based off Deuteronomy 4:29.
